Speed Dating and how to prepare for it

Singles are discussing how to prepare for a speed dating event

What is speed dating and how to prepare for it?

When you’re on the prowl for a new boyfriend or girlfriend and you want something different than online dating, speed dating may just be what you’re looking for. Speed dating is described as an organized means of meeting prospective partners whereby participants evaluate one another over the course of a single event through series of very brief one-on-one meetings. Just think of having between six to eight minutes with someone to determine if he’s your type and then moving on to the next, and the next, and so on.  It can actually be quite exciting!

Speed dating is a wonderful event because you get to meet a lot of single individuals in one shebang, so instead of taking months to sift through the single guys in your area, you get to take one evening and take the fast approach to sifting through eligible bachelors. Effective speed dating will require a little preparation, as well as care given to questions you intend to ask. You only have a few minutes to connect with each individual during the night. Therefore, it is helpful to know a little bit about how you will present yourself, while you’re finding out if they’re someone you’d like to know better.

If you’re thinking about speed dating, there are a few things you ought to know before going into the event. Here are several ways you can prepare yourself for the event:

1. Relax and breathe

Even if this is your first experience with this kind of dating, don’t panic. You should see it more as a rebirth and new opportunities. A little anxiety is normal and most everyone will be contending with some, but rest assured that the evening will go smoothly as you put your best foot forward and remember that speed dating can be fun and exciting. Take a deep breath before each encounter and remember to breathe during the conversations. You’ll be alright.

2. Be presentable

When it comes to presenting yourself, be sure to put some time and thought into the matter.  You don’t want to show up in your grunge clothes that are wrinkled and smelly. Take the time to choose clothes that accentuate your body and style. Clothing can say a lot about who you are and certainly be yourself, but don’t be afraid to dress up and work the clothing angle.

3.Have an open mind

Speed dating may be new to you, so be open to the new experience and give others a chance. Also, give the dates a chance regardless of how you feel when you see them at first glance. That person across from you may be nervous and take a minute or two to feel relaxed enough to open up.  Have an open mind and determine to go into the experience with the intent of having fun.

4. Have some questions handy

You’re speed dating to get to know a little bit about others in a short amount of time, so have some questions handy. You may want to ask the same questions to each person or sort of go with the flow with some. Common initial questions include:

  • What do you do for a living?
  • What do you like to do for fun?
  • What is your favorite type of food? Travel?
  • What are you seeking in a partner?

Speed dating can be a wonderful experience and many people have met people that they’ve connected with and went on more dates after the event. Some people make friends as well. The event really is what you make it and even if you walk away not having really made a connection, the event is worth attending, as you get to experience something new and feel good about yourself for having put yourself out there. Go ahead and give it a try and see if your next boo is in the speed dating crowd.
