About event

Karen Montgomery is a sculptor and former state delegate and senator for District 14 of Montgomery County. She served as an elected official from 2002 - 2016, when she retired as a Maryland State Senator. Montgomery studied art and received a Master of Fine Art degree from The George Washington University. She spent the early part of her career teaching art and directing gallery spaces in the DC region.

Later, she served in the Maryland political sphere and strengthened support for the arts, and for constituents with disabilities. She primarily focuses on her art since retiring from congress.

Karen S. Montgomery’s sculptures are made in marble, bronze, wood, soapstone, and other metals. Her work is primarily figurative, but often includes abstracted elements. She draws inspiration from people and places from her personal history, as well as from snakes, winged figures, or other mythological and art historical elements.

Much of her sculptural process is reductive, where portions of material are carved or chipped away to reveal a new form. This exhibit will be a retrospective of Karen’s practice as an artist.

Please join Ms. Montgomery and the Museum guests Saturday April 7, 2018 11:00 - 1:00 for a demonstration on marble carving, and insight into Ms. Montgomery's creative process.
